Things are growing!

What a difference good temperatures and sufficient rain makes! All the gardens are growing well and there are even things to pick right now!

At Aptiv, there's a lot of spinach that needs to be picked. We will be planting corn where the large spinach plants are next week. So, if you want spinach and radishes, go now!

At city hall, the spinach planted last fall is up and growing and can be picked now.

The weekly garden times are now set. If you want to garden with a group or have someone show you how to pick stuff, come when we are working together:

Aptiv: Friday mornings at 8 a.m. If there is steady or heavy rain, we may postpone until Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Call or email to verify.

City Hall: Tuesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. Cancelled in case of heavy or steady rain.

Hogan: Wednesday mornings at 8 a.m.

Planting City Hall and Aptiv Spinach

We finally got people together on a no rain day to plant more at city hall. The peas and spinach planted the end of March are coming up now. Some spinach and lettuce planted last fall are up, and some things have yet to wake up. More surprise garlic is also appearing!

Tuesday evening, we planted broccoli, cabbages, and cauliflower, plus carrots, lettuce, and radishes.

The City Hall weekly garden time will be Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. if you like gardening with friends or want to learn what's a weed and what's a carrot, come then.

SPINACH - There is spinach to pick at the Aptive garden right now!!

Weather!

We are postponing planting at Aptiv until Friday, May 3 at 8 a.m. because of predicted rain this week.

We will do some planting at City Hall next Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. if it's not raining.

We are waiting to hear about the Hogan garden schedule and will post news as soon as it's available.

Please email, text or call if you have questions!

Planting in the greenhouse!

UW-L students started seeds at Aptiv 4/18

It was too wet to plant outside today at City Hall, but fortunately, we were able to plant inside at the Aptiv greenhouse! Thanks to Clara H. and a group of UW-La Crosse volunteers, we started several things that we'll plant out in the gardens in six to eight weeks plus some things we can use to fill in spaces or grow in tubs.

In general, the peas are starting to poke up at Aptiv along with the spring veg planted at the end of March--beets, carrots, kohlrabi, and more.

Pick now! That's right! We have beautiful spinach at the Aptiv garden that started itself earlier this spring! Planting spinach in the fall and letting it "wake up" on its own in spring when conditions are right can mean fresh spinach in April!!

Our next group planting at Aptiv will be on Friday morning, April 26 at 8 a.m. weather permitting. Call or text 608-315-2693 to check if the weather is iffy. No experience is necessary!

Planting season! and seeking "yardners"

2023 Planting at Hogan
We are going to start planting the gardens soon! Each garden will set its own planting dates and times. If you are interested in joining the planting parties, please email us at MinisterOfBeans@gmail.com or call 608-315-2693.

We are also looking for a few yard garden spaces for people who lost their garden plots at Washburn. If you have a disused garden space in your yard OR if you have a garden but no longer have the time or energy to keep it up, consider partnering with a "yardner" who can bring it back to life and share some of the produce. Email or call if you have such a space.

Join us!

If you love gardening and want to help increase availability of healthy, fresh vegetables in our neighborhoods, consider joining the planning team. We decide on planting dates, share ideas and challenges, coordinate volunteers, and work to make sure the gardens continue into the future.

We're looking for one or two volunteers to help coordinate the City Hall garden. If you are interested, please email MinisterOfBeans at gmail

Because La Crosse has now shifted into a different USDA planting zone, we plan to start planting a little earlier this year. So, watch for planting dates starting around mid-April.
